The spatial qualities that were there made me want to restore the property and make it into a livable home. The high vaulted ceilings with the thick masonry walls and the exterior spaces with the panoramic vistas of almost the whole island made me want to explore the possibilities of creating a habitation experience in an existing old non-housing building.”

Old-Fashioned Grocery and Colorful House in Water Valley, Miss

Four years ago, there were 18 empty storefronts on Main Street, in Water Valley. Now, there are six. Ms. van Beuren’s B.T.C. Old-Fashioned Grocery is housed in a 140-year-old building that she and her husband, Kagan Coughlin, bought from a developer who was planning to raze it for its bricks. The couple rents a storefront to Julia Ray, who sells clothing of her own design. Yalo Studio, the gallery owned by Ms. Patton and Ms. Fussell, is next door. Bill Warren painted the vintage-looking signage for both businesses, and has created signs for many of Main Street’s new ventures. The rest of the story you can read here.

Portuguese architects Aires Mateus, whom you’ve seen before on Yatzer come once again with a very interesting project in the Aroeira district in Portugal. This time the project takes the form of a residence which sits on a 1,500 square meter hexagonal site, from which the house derives its shape. Of course, the hexagonal shape goes easily unnoticed as the site lacks fencing and therefore the land spills out and into the surrounding pine trees blending in with the surrounding landscape.

In the 30 schools of the Swedish free school organisation Vittra there are no classes or classrooms – instead, the students are taught in groups according to level based on the school’s pedagogical principles of ’the wateringhole’, ’the show-off’, ’the cave’, ’the campfire’ and ’the laboratory’ – didactic approaches that create different types of learning and teaching situations. In Vittra, they do not believe in regular classes and the school organisation’s vision is to create an everyday for the individual students where individual development, a living cultural work and challenging learning environments are most important.

Shipping Container Home Office in San Francisco, California

Shipping containers continue to be a popular choice within the design world. Over the last few weeks we have encountered several implementations including the Shipping Container Guest House and of course the beautifully constructed Shipping Container Starbucks location. Both of these have been awesome ways of incorporating containers on the exterior area of a residence, but what about on the interior?

This is exactly what San Francisco, California based couple Jeff Wardell and Claudia Sagan did in their 127 foot loft. The industrialized apartment was complemented nicely by the addition of two shipping containers that are used as the home’s guest bedroom and home office.
