Penthouse from Space

The penthouse is really GREAT. It was designed by Elke Meissl and her partner & husband, Roman Delugan, as a rooftop addition for their family, but it feels more like a spaceship that has landed on the roof and will move to a new destination as soon as it gets what it wants. This Alien sense of glomming is particularly evident in a cantilevered section that sticks out the back of the penthouse and looms above the building’s courtyard. It connects to the home’s main stairwell and contains the entry foyer. From there the apartment unfolds not in a conventional hierarchy of rooms but rather in a sequence of vectors that rush in and out toward the surrounding roofscapes of Vienna’s Wieden district, combining a sense of perpetual motion and vertigo.

The El Born (La Ribera) neighbourhood in Barcelona, Spain, is a small village that is very fashionable and holds an authentic tie to its old Gothic history. Violin makers, glass-makers and other creative people roam the streets of this neighbourhood often compared to SoHo in New York City and Le Marais in Paris. Nestled by the famous Mercat del Born lies Cafe Kafka, a cosmopolitan bistro with a bohemian ambience that makes any local or adventurous traveller comfortable. With two old tables that were at the establishment prior to renovation as inspiration, Yolanda Vilalta and Helena Jauma, have created an environment that captures the essence of the neighbourhood and respects the integrity of the building’s history and structure. The 15th-century church of Rodel on the Isle of Lewis, built for the warlike chiefs of the MacLeods, towers over the sea lochs of Scotland’s Outer Hebrides. Nothing in early modern Britain, from its cities to its remotest corners, was more political than religion. The church in every parish—nearly always the most imposing building—was as much a symbol of worldly control as a shrine to God.

While island hopping around the Bahamas in a Cessna C172 aircraft, I made this aerial of a Curtiss C-46 that ditched on November 15, 1980. It crashed while it was on a drug smuggling mission for the Colombian Medellín drug cartel and lies in shallow water east of the Norman’s Cay airport in the Exumas, Bahamas. My preflight Internet research paid off!

Klevens Udde is an unusual project designed by Swedish studio Wingårdh Arkitektontor.
The aim is to create one of the most exclusive residential areas in Europe, about midway up the west coast of Sweden, close to Smögen Island.
This project, still to be built, features nine amazing triangular houses, as well as twelve terraced houses and five boathouse-style homes.

When Brazilian architect Guilherme Torres and his colleagues were asked to decorate the house of Brazilian DJ and collector Pil Marques in São Paulo, Brazil, they initially thought it would be easy to help him organize his various collections and adapt the apartment to the likes and taste of his flat mates, artist Daniel Zanardi and DJ Adriana Recchi. But what started as a routine task ended up as an unpredictable adventure where the collection took the reins and demanded all the energy and attention of Studio Guilherme Torres. Guilherme approached the owner’s hundreds ofvintage toys, vinyl records and art pieces as a curator would do, through trying to find the ideal furniture that would house the toys and taking care of the smallest detail. The whole process, as he points out, came to a climax that lasted four days, involving the whole team of architects, painters and electricians working until the wee hours in order to deliver whatGuilherme considers to be one of his masterpieces.

House in Chihuahua

The House In Chihuahua is part of a golf club community in the desert like northern region of Mexico. The dwelling was designed to accommodate the special climatic circumstances of the area: in winter temperatures can fall to minus ten degrees Celsius, while in summertime temperatures can rise to above forty degrees Celsius. The differences between daytime and night time temperatures can vary by as much as twenty degrees. To balance the extreme temperature differences, we partially buried the house into the mountain slope to take advantage of the soil’s thermal mass. The colder soil around the house absorbs heat accumulated during the day, and at night the ground gives off heat to the building. The house is organized around a series of patios and roof openings that provide light, ventilation, and views to different areas of the house. The sloped roof acts as a new topography, which blurs the boundaries between the constructed area and the surrounding landscape. http://www.architizer.com

A Dream Loft in Bagnolet, France

A Parisian couple decided to leave the city centre for the dreary suburb of Bagnolet to find the lofty home of their dreams. He is a textile designer for an iconic French brand. She is a costume designer for films. Together they bought their loft as a “concrete block”, part of a housing project of similar apartments: The industrial pedigree is owed to the building site on which a sawmill initially stood. With the help of architect Isabelle Rouyer who used Le Corbusier’s “Modulor” to calculate the proportions, the owners designed the interior from scratch.

“Minh Anh Vo & Victor Schuft are two French graphic designers, though their names may sound either Vietnamese or German. Minh Anh was born in Annecy and grew up in Paris. Victor comes from Troyes. They met in Brussels, where they studied Graphic Design and Typography at La Cambre School of Arts. After graduating in 2006, they decided to move to Los Angeles and eventually got married at LAX. They are now living and working in Brooklyn.”

“We worked on the brand identity of The National – Bar & Dining Rooms, located in Manhattan Midtown, in collaboration with Love & War. The project received an award for Outstanding Restaurant Graphics at the 2011 James Beard Foundation Awards. The project also received an ADC Silver Cube for Brand Campaign at the 2011 Art Directors Club Awards.”

Capital Kitchen is an external-facing food emporium also comprising of a dining café and bar, as well as providing a kitchen and food-based homewares component. Timber floors and joinery with a strong use of Carrara marble add a lofty natural feel, paired with the surrounding textural brick walls. Attention to detail through furniture and display echo an old style and natural feel.
